Carson was still in a snit after his mindless, grueling workout. He showered and changed then sat in the living room. He needed sex. That’s why he was so upset with Grace. A flash of chagrin went through him. She was doing something admirable, something needed, and he blew up at her.

Well, too bad. He didn’t need to be in a relationship with her. As soon as he had the thought, he knew it wasn’t true.

Well, then it was time to move on.

He took another sip of the bottled water and picked up his phone. Clicked into a contact. Marci would welcome a one night stand with him. He wrote the text.

But something kept him from pressing send. He tossed the phone on the couch. Maybe he should go out for a while. Where? Alone?

You don’t have to be alone, Carson, Tim Daniels had told him once. We’re here for you. Come back to the Brothers of Fire.

Hell! Was he thinking of returning to a group he’d so cruelly left? Grace had messed up his mind but good. Bolting up, he paced his living room. On the third lap, he found his phone and punched in a number.

“Tim Daniels.”

Carson waited.

“Hello.”

“Hi, Tim. It’s…” He had to clear his throat. “It’s Carson.” This was the first time he’d called one of the Brothers of Fire. “I, um, I need…are you busy tonight? Now?”

“No, Ava just left for a parents’ night at her school. The girls are at a study group. Do you want to meet? Or come here?”

“No, let’s meet.” He couldn’t handle going to Tim’s house.

“How about the bar at the Mariott on the outskirts of town? It’s usually quiet.”

“All right.”

“I can be there in fifteen minutes.”

“Thanks.”

“My pleasure, buddy. Truly.”

After Carson hung up, his pulse was skyrocketing. But he forced himself to calm. He’d made a decision and would follow through. This didn’t mean he’d go back to the group. Or to Grace.

Fifteen minutes later, he walked into the Mariott. The place was quiet except for some soothing jazz that filtered in. Though it was dim, he could see Tim was already here, and Carson forced himself to cross to his friend. “Hey, thanks for coming.”

“I’m glad to be here.” When Carson sat, Tim went on, “Do you look like you’re going to toss your cookies because you called me, or because of the reason you called.”

Carson swallowed hard. “A little of both.”

“Relax about me. I won’t push. But let’s get a drink and you can tell me what’s got you so upset.”

They ordered beers and Tim said, “Go ahead.”

“Remember when we saw you guys at Connor’s?”

“Yes.”

“Remember the twins?”

He grinned. “Hard to forget those two.”

Carson fisted his hands under the table. “One of them, Grace, has me tied up in knots.”

“She seemed warm and friendly.”

“But not my type, right?”

“Well, she had on a modest dress and didn’t wear cakes of makeup. But she is beautiful.”

Their beers arrived with a basket of popcorn.

“I think so, too. Unfortunately. I don’t know what I was thinking to get involved with someone like her.
